Whitby -
A picturesque fishing port, steeped in tradition, on the North East
Coast of the U.K. and once home to the famous seafarer Captain
Cook and his ship the Endeavour. Atmospheric and hauntingly beautiful, Whitby has an unrivalled charm and mystical feel. The latter inspired Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. Goths in particular love the town for this and arrive twice a year for the Goth Week-ends. The striking Abbey, at the top of 199 steps, quaint fishermen’s cottages, fishing boats, safe, sandy beaches, olde worlde establishments dotted around the pretty harbour, continue to lure holiday makers and film crews alike. English & American iconic actors have won Oscars treading the cobbled streets of Whitby. The more traditional shops and eateries such as The Magpie Café, voted best fish & chips by Rick Stein, nestle in harmony with contemporary bistros and the chic jet jewellers that are so popular. Whitby Regatta, folk week, musical events and theatrical light entertainment are at (Whitby Pavilion Complex 01947 604855) and for the more adventurous there are of course, golf, fishing surfing, trekking and a leisure centre to pump up the muscles. Breathtaking heather clad moors that cocoon Whitby are an open invitation to enjoy physical pursuits such as hiking, walking, and exploring nature trails. The Dalby forest near Pickering is a particular favourite for this type of adventure. www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest . For cycle enthusiasts, there is a fantastic sea/cycle route taking in a large part of the moors and coastline. For more details go to www.moortoseacycle.net. Another activity you may like is a trip out to sea on the Esk Belle where you can just cruise the coast or go on an exciting whale watch adventure. www.whitbycoastalcruises.co.uk . for further info
